Vigilius Mountain Resort - Cutting-edge Sustainability in the Alps of South Tyrol

Our Ambassador’s Bright Journey

“Special attention to the guest, professionalism and sincere smiles, warmth, and a genuine ability to welcome and convey the philosophy and roots of this place. Amazing architecture, cutting-edge in 2003 and contemporary today, where space acquires new meanings in harmony with the landscape. One breathes in that oxygen that I always seek in my Bright Journey.
We played bowls, in the woods. We climbed to the top of the mountain with a romantic single-seat chairlift. Scent of larch and fir trees. The woods, restorative. The view sweeps over the mountains. One sleeps with a down jacket and a temperature of 14 degrees…and in the hottest summer in history, here, a summer thunderstorm also comes and rain that washes thoughts and fatigue. Simply: being.”

Where it is located

Eight kilometers from Merano, located at an altitude of 1,500 meters on the Vigilio Mountain, at the foot of which lies the village of Lana, already reaching the hotel is an experience in itself: the cable car is in fact the only means that takes guests to this paradise in seven minutes (by the way, it is the second oldest cable car in all of Europe). Zero cars, no noise, zero stress.

Design and mood

Opened in 2003, the Vigilius Mountain Resort was built on the foundations of the old Berghotel in Monte San Vigilio, built in 1912. For the founder, Ulrich Ladurner, it was the realization of a dream for which he relied on the visionary Matteo Thun, who created a symbiosis of emotion, architecture, and ecology. There are no boundaries between nature and architecture. Larch wood, glass, stone, clay the main materials. Contemporary and modern.

Room style

41 rooms on two levels. No televisions in the spirit of Digital Detox. A wall of natural clay separates the bathroom from the sleeping area. Each room offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape and has a balcony or garden terrace.

The common areas

A lounge area at the entrance, various terraces, a fantastic spa, the paradise garden, and the large rooftop terrace. And then what is called the Piazza, an exchange and meeting place with a fireplace and terrace over the woods where aperitifs are offered from 6 p.m. every day. Restaurant at 1,500 meters, a Stube, and a beautiful library on two floors where a great classic film is shown every night.

Services

Gourmet restaurant with fantastic panoramic windows and 0-km cuisine (products come from Lana, by cable car). Fresh spring mineral water. Worth mentioning is the menu’s focus on vegans, vegetarians and those with lactose and gluten intolerances. Impressive spa with spring water pool, panoramic Finnish sauna, steam room and wellness treatments.

Technology experience

The door opens with the classic key, intended to create the HOME experience. However, the guest is provided with a wooden magnetic card to operate the energy system in the room with a view to energy saving. Presence of automatic radiant heating.
Smart TV intentionally not present in the Digital Detox philosophy.

Eco-sustainability

It is the first Hotel in Italy to be defined as Class A Climate House (central radiant heating using wood chips supplied by local farmers): underfloor heating and from the clay wall that creates a natural balance. Hotel Vigilius has been awarded the Earth Check Gold and Most Sustainable Hotel in the World awards.
It is sustainable in every way: 0 km products, use of spring water, mobility, and structure. They also reimburse CO2 emissions of guests arriving by air.
