Hotel Caju - A designer boutique hotel resulting from the restoration of an immense historical heritage in the heart of the city
Our Ambassador’s Bright Journey
“Resulting from the recovery of an important historical heritage, staying at Hotel Caju means combining the soul of the past with the irreverence of the present. From residence to small business headquarters, to factories, to the present day, where one finds oneself in a boutique hotel with elegant design and a cozy, intimate atmosphere”.
Where it is located
We are in Portugal, in the center of Funchal on Rua de la Carreira, capital of Portugal’s Madeira archipelago. The location is very strategic to get around the city on foot and visit some of the major attractions. The street is quaint, with several period buildings, restaurants, and bars.
Design and mood
With a modern and minimal style that is unique and personal, Hotel Caju was born within the walls of a historic building. It is a renovation by architect Nini Andrade Silva who kept the original elements such as the stone of the walls and the introduction of materials such as wood, metal, and glass.
Room style
24 rooms and suites of different types: single (16sqm), double (20sqm), double with balcony (20sqm), penthouse, superior with balcony (21sqm) and junior suite. The rooms have common elements such as the materials used and furnishing accessories, however, which are adapted to the different spaces within the building, making them different.
The common areas
Guests have at their disposal a small lounge, the ‘Petit Lounge’ where they can relax and make new acquaintances, always small in size; the modern but well-equipped gym – ‘Petit Gym’; and finally, the breakfast space which is the same as the restaurant – ‘Prima Caju’ (open from 8am to 6pm and from 8am to 4pm on weekends).
Services
Interestingly, guests can access the facilities of The Vine hotel, which belongs to the same group, with special conditions and discounts for Caju Hotel guests such as lounge bar, restaurant, rooftop pool and spa.
Technology experience
Excellent reception both in the room and in common areas.
Access the room using a key card. The card inserted in the card holder manages the switching on of all lights in the room, and the air conditioning can be individually controlled via a panel at the entrance. An interesting feature is the QR code imprinted in a card on the bedside table. Scanning it opens a link to some hotel information about how to replace water, coffee, and tea.
Eco-sustainability
Attention to sustainability is present in some aspects but could be improved. The “vanity pack” offers Q-tips and makeup remover pads in rock paper (100% tree free) packaging. Water is offered using only glass bottles.
In the room, there are classic messages to incentivize guest green behavior by inviting them to reduce the change of sheets and towels.
Care has been shown in the renovation of the building; the original masonry stone is visible in some rooms and in the dining room. Breakfast is a la carte and served at the table, which avoids waste.
