“A night in a “convent”.”
Where it is located
Le Monastere des Augustines is conveniently located in the historic centre of Quebec City, just a few steps from the lively Rue Saint Jean in the city centre, overlooking the Rue des Remparts with a view of the harbour.
Design and mood
The ancient Augustinian monastery has undergone a major architectural renovation in which the contemporary meets the past with the aim of maintaining and enhancing the historical identity of the place. The result is a journey through time assisted by the comfort of modernity.
Room style
There are two types of rooms available to guests: the “monastic” rooms, which recall what were once the cells where the nuns used to sleep; and the contemporary rooms, which reflect a modern yet essential style in keeping with the spirit that this place represents.
The common areas
The hotel has numerous communal areas, but what characterises it is the museum space that has been created inside, through which one can trace the history of the life of the nuns and the monastery from which the hotel was derived. There is also space for contemporary themed art exhibitions. An internal garden with a vegetable garden, a breakfast room/restaurant, a small cafeteria, a shop and a space where guests can regenerate body and mind with yoga classes complete the areas available to guests. The hotel also has an internal car park, which is very useful given the difficulty of parking in the area.
Services
Breakfast is included, which here becomes a mystical experience: you are invited to silence, in line with the ancient monastic vocation of this place. Buffet with local zero-kilometre products with an emphasis on vegetarian/vegan options. The breakfast room transforms into a restaurant in the evenings where, again, there is a proposal of dishes with a focus on local raw materials. Staff helpful and attentive in providing information.
Technology experience
The entrance to the room takes place with a classic card reading system: there is an internal card holder to maintain the connection. For the rest, from a technological point of view, this hotel is not innovative, as it does not present other services to optimise the experience.
Eco-sustainability
The place invites ecological attention through a number of elements: the intelligent switching on and off of the electricity in the room, with a light control switch; the linen is not changed until the third day of the stay, just as no cleaning is carried out except on request or after two days of stay. From the point of view of the building as a whole, numerous measures have been taken, such as energy-saving LED lighting systems. Finally, the hotel itself is the result of the restoration of the pre-existing historical building, supporting local culture and tradition.
